Vitamin D Deficient Asthma Patients
Replacement of vitamin D (in asthmatic patients who have low levels of vitamin D) does not reduce asthma exacerbations.
This study in the UK of 250 patients with below normal levels of vitamin D did not show any improvement in asthma or exacerbations of asthma in the 125 patients who received vitamin D replacements when followed clinically for one year. The other 125 patients received placebo. This was a double blind study so patients did not know if they were taking the vitamin D replacement or a placebo. Reference: Thorax, 2015; 70 (5) 451.
